In the last years probiotics have constantly increased in importance and aroused growing interest in animal nutrition. Processing of feed has become more and more aggressive and these tough feed manufacturing conditions, aimed to reduce the microbial charge by potential pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli, also lead to the elimination of the lactic acid bacteria, which are beneficial for the host animal. It is therefore important to add to the feed an adequate amount of live lactic acid bacteria which, once in the upper part of the intestine, can positively affect the intestinal microbial balance of the animals. In the EU the ban of the antibiotic growth promoters as feed additives has also contributed to this new trend. The application of probiotics in animal nutrition represents nowadays a modern and natural way to improve the zootechnical performances as well as the health and welfare of farm animals.
The probiotic feed additives produced by Cerbios-Pharma SA are defined as microbial feed additives for the stabilization of the intestinal microflora and are based on the probiotic active ingredient E. faecium SF68® (strain deposit E. faecium NCIMB 10415) and commercialized under the tradenames Cernivet® and Cylactin®.
These products have been successfully applied in broilers, calves and pigs for more than thirty years in various countries and in different climatic and rearing conditions.
The most classical product form is a granulate called Cernivet® LBC G35. The pelletable product forms Cernivet® LBC ME10 and Cernivet® LBC ME20 plus are the result of the specific know-how of Cerbios-Pharma SA in the field of microencapsulation. The protective microcapsules have been specially developed to withstand aggressive pelleting conditions and to release the metabolically active SF68® once in the gastrointestinal tract of the animals.
The different formulations (microencapsulated and granulated) of the Cernivet® product range meet the requirements of the modern feed industry and have been developed for the use in premixtures, milk replacers, water, mash feed and pelleted feed.
