Background and use

A great deal of activity was devoted during the last years in order to develop analogues of Vitamin D showing the desired cell differenciating and immunomodulating activity, but with strongly reduced hypercalcemic activity.
Calcipotriol was the first Vitamin D analogue on the market and is licensed for once- or twice-daily use in the treatment of moderate plaque psoriasis.
It is available as scalp lotion, cream or ointment.
Combination of Calcipotriol with a potent steroid (Betamethasone) is more effective and is better tolerated.
Synergy with other treatments, like PUVA, UVB and ciclosporin has been reported in some studies.
